Portfolio Spotlight: Contextos
Use what you got to affect what you care about
Transformation, and "real" change, comes from within. This is something I believe to be true from both a personal and community level.
The latter feels daunting at times, especially with our 24 hr news cycle and multiple feeds of negative news circulating constantly. One of my personal goals for my professional life is to use my talent and skill to help in whatever way I can.
Enter the latest manifestation of this: Contextos :
Contextos is a non-profit that works with youth from areas marginalized as "high-risk", and with young folks currently incarcerated. The team meets with them over many months throughout the year, engaging in healing circles, working on social-emotional, communication and literacy skills, all toward the culminating project of a published book, written by the young persons—the Authors—themselves.
Contextos reached out to JNJ Creative about a year ago to help as a design collaborator and potential mentor/positive influence to a group of Chicago school-age Authors. Fast-forward to now, where we've just ceremoniously wrapped up the official 2018 Chicago school-age Author circles!
I had to put my project management and graphic design hat on for this one ya'll. Late nights organizing files, making edits, calling printers and producing page-by-page designs for each Author made for an eventful last few weeks. In the end though, we have some beeeeaautifiul (if I must say so myself) hard-cover compilations that honor their stories.
PS: Shout out to artist Deon Reed for making a personalized illustration for each Author that I used in my designs throughout the book and the cover. Peep the finished product below.
What good can you do with the good skills that you have? We all have something ;)
